2010 Chablis

Jesse Lewis, Good Drop blog: http://gooddrop.wordpress.com

“I do like me a Chablis. Lean Chardonnay fruit, an abundance of minerality and screwcap is a winning combination. For those who are unaware, Marchand & Burch is a joint project between Howard Park’s Jeff Burch and Pascal Marchand of Burgundy’s Domaine du Clos des Epeneaux.

As you’d expect, it’s a thrilling race between citrus and mineral. Lemons galore. Some white grapefruit and Granny Smith too. The minerality comes across as mostly chalk, and in fact (at least to my palate), reminds me of that of Champagne. It’s fresher and less flinty than many other Chablis, but there is still some classic oyster shell character to it. The wine has a wonderful texture that derives itself from a combination of the grape, (partial?) malolactic fermentation, and old oak. The mouthfeel is supported energetically by racy, citrussy acid and chalky mineral. There’s more complexity and persistence on the finish than you’d expect too. It meanders between mineral, fruit and a foreshadowing of honey.

A Chablis that you can rely on – both in price and in the safeguard provided by screwcap. Pair with Cheddar/hard cheeses, or shellfish." Very Good
